Born in Purple Haze Bar and having spanned the city from Big Sky Mind to B-Side, its most famous incarnations happened in Cubao X — a previously peaceful courtyard of indie art and vintage finds — which might have been doomed to murder by lease, if not for one Mei Bastes.As Meiday’s spearhead, face, and name, Mei often gets written off as a scene queen, but anyone who has witnessed Meiday’s hundreds-strong turnout cannot deny that Mei reigns supreme.Her grip on the gig scene is at once an extended hand and a raised middle finger. She has fostered a community that’s hungry to contribute to Meiday’s welfare — be it through poster design, hosting duties, or performance. On the other hand, by keeping Meiday free of charge, Mei has declared a stance against the status quo of exorbitant door charges for the audience and pay-to-play fees for the bands. Meiday is known as the best party anyone can throw, but it is elevated to cult status because Mei is not just anyone. Her innate audacity and brazen free speech invites controversy, and makes her an easy target for the ungrateful. She deals equally with hate and fanmail, and has been known to exercise an iron fist when partygoers overstep their boundaries.
